Learning Legal Ethics from The Lincoln Lawyer

The first season of the Lincoln Lawyer series was Netflix’s most watched English-language series globally, having made the Top 10 in 90 countries. Although we enjoyed watching the exploits of the Lincoln Lawyer, was he ethical? The goal of this program is for attorneys to review the Rules of Professional Conduct while discussing this fascinating series. To do so, we will use film clips to examine the Lincoln Lawyer’s conduct and determine whether he violated the Rules of Professional Conduct, including:

  • Rule 1.1, Competence of Counsel
  • Rule 1.2, Allocation of Authority Between a Client and Lawyer
  • Rule 1.6, Confidentiality of Information
  • Rule 3.3, Candor Toward the Tribunal

– Philip Bogdanoff; Attorney and Instructor
