Elimination of Bias: Helping Clients with Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health Conditions

Clients will often provide personal details to their attorney that fall outside of the scope of representation. It is easy enough for the attorney to remind the client of what the actual scope of representation is and to dismiss the extraneous details. However, before you take that route, remember that the first words uttered in response to a client’s personal revelation of a substance use disorder or mental health condition carry extreme weight – not only in how the client chooses to deal with their condition, but also in how the client evaluates their relationship with their attorney. In this presentation, Rachel Schromen will provide valuable insight into how to screen for indicators of substance use disorder or mental health conditions, how to discuss these with your clients in a positive and healthy manner, and how to proactively encourage the client to seek help or otherwise address these matters.
