Neuroscience, Well-Being, and Ethics

The National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being has stated that the duty of competence as articulated in Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 1.1. “[i]ncludes lawyers’ ability to make healthy, positive work/life choices to assure not only a quality of life within their families and communities, but also to help them make responsible decisions for their clients. It includes maintaining their own long term wellbeing.” Indeed, lawyer disciplinary matters frequently involve a disability-related condition of mental health or substance abuse. This program applies the cutting-edge work in the field of neuroscience to lawyer well-being and ethical behavior.

  • Learn the latest neuroscience behind sleep and its impact on immunity, mental health, substance use, ethical behavior, and performance.
  • Learn the latest neuroscience behind trust and how to generate the moral molecule—oxytocin—to enhance ethical behavior, performance, and joy (yes, there is a biochemical basis for joy).  You cannot achieve the six pillars of well-being for yourself and your organization without trust.
  • Learn how short sleeping or inhibited rem/nrem sleep activates your lizard brain and your ability to act ethically is impaired. If you don’t generate oxytocin or know how to generate it, your behavior may be self-interested and unethical.

This program will also introduce you to a stress release protocol that is used by the U.S. military, first-responders like firefighters and law enforcement, the Red Cross, and other humanitarian organizations around the world.
