The death of a loved one, and the associated feelings of grief and loss, can exacerbate aspects of the practice of law and the legal profession that create the way lawyers are particularly vulnerable and thus at greater risk of chemical and mental health disorders. This session discusses how adjusting one’s professional commitments by taking a leave of absence can be a critical part of recognizing signs of addiction or illness, accessing support, coping with loss and preventing or treating mental health issues or substance use in difficult circumstances including managing a serious illness for oneself or a loved one and coping with loss and grief.
