Quieting Your Inner Critic: Managing Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome

Originally presented:  August 19, 2025     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

The American Psychological Association defines imposter syndrome as a pervasive feeling of self-doubt, insecurity, and incompetence despite evidence that you are skilled and competent. Doubting your abilities and achievements can happen to anyone, regardless of job or social status, and many high-achieving individuals experience it.

From the APA’s definition it is clear that it’s important to recognize the wide range of experiences that go from a few weeks of self-doubt after transitioning to a new job all the way to a lifelong fear of being a fraud. You may occasionally experience some of the symptoms of imposter syndrome while not suffering long-term from their negative impact; while for others, confidence, energy levels, and job effectiveness are seriously compromised.

This practical presentation is based on information from experts such as Dr. Valerie Young, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Psychology Association and will address ways to:

  • Recognize the symptoms of self-doubt and imposter syndrome.
  • Understand the risk factors related to imposter syndrome.
  • Clarify and manage expectations with self and others.
  • Manage doubt and dissatisfaction constructively.
  • Attribute success and failure in healthy ways.
  • Minimize self-doubt and other tendencies.
