Rock ‘n’ Roll Law: Music Copyright Through the Rolling Stones – Part II: Music Copyright Exclusive Rights and Revenue Streams
This is the second of two webcasts being presented by Jim Jesse of Rock ’n’ Roll Law where he provides an overview of music copyright law by using The Rolling Stones’ career as a conceptual framework. In this webcast, Jim will explore in-depth the exclusive rights you acquire when you have a copyright and what those basic rights mean under federal law. Learn how the music industry has changed over the years and how that affects the law, including all the revenue sources for music. All the while, listen to music and audio clips to elaborate on the law and follow the discography of The Stones as a case study. The focus will be on copyright infringement cases while listening to the songs in question. You will learn the basic rules regarding proving a copyright infringement case, along with defenses, and damages in a copyright action. Finally, Jim will switch the focus from The Rolling Stones to The Beatles in order to demonstrate the unique ethics issues faced when representing an organization, specifically when representing a band or artist. Specific emphasis will be placed on the ABA’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct (MRPC) 1.7 (Conflict of interest – current client); 1.13 (Organization as a client); 1.14 (Client with Diminished Capacity); and 2.1 (Role as Advocate).
