Statistically, people with mental health conditions are more likely to be victims of violence than to be perpetrators. Yet, myths persist around this issue in our society and in our profession. Mental illnesses affect people around the world, and yet no other country experiences the number of mass shootings as we do in the U.S. It is important to end the mistaken, widespread belief that acts of violence are driven by mental illness. Studies have found that of all violent acts in the U.S., less than five percent of violence in the U.S. is attributable to mental illness.
Join LCL Executive Director Joan Bibelhausen and NAMI Executive Director Sue Abderholden for a discussion of both the myth and reality around violence and mental illness as it affects our profession. Take steps to understand and treat clients and co-workers with dignity and respect, while also understanding when a risk may exist that needs addressing.
