Protecting Attorney-Client Privilege in Common Patent Situations

How can privilege be protected when working through patent freedom to practice situations? How is privilege affected when patent lawyers and non-lawyers communicate for purposes of (a) receiving legal advice on patents, and (b) receiving business advice or some other purpose?
