Government Employee and Elected Official Posts on Social Media – Are There Limits? What Actions to Take?

Originally presented:  July 30, 2026     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

Social media has transformed how government employees and elected officials communicate — and how quickly a single post can spark a public firestorm. This session examines the legal framework governing public employee and elected official speech online, including First Amendment protections and their limits, anti-discrimination laws, Minnesota's government data practices requirements, and applicable civil service rules. Using real-world case studies, attendees will learn how courts have analyzed responses to controversial posts and what factors tip the balance.
