HardTalk: How to Deliver Bad News and How to Say “No”

Originally presented:  March 15, 2022     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

Delivering bad news, addressing dissatisfaction, and saying “no” are skills that can be learned over time and with a lot of practice and patience. Some crucial ingredients are authenticity, presence, focus, goal-orientation, and compassion. This presentation provides you with insights into best practices for delivering bad news, whether it is to a demanding client, an under-performing co-worker, or any challenging situation with one of your many stakeholders. While it may be impossible to make a difficult conversation fun and easy, it is possible to learn about proven tips and tools that help you conduct these conversations in an empathetic and strategic manner.

Objectives for this presentation:

  1. Gain insights into what may keep you from delivering bad news and saying “no.”
  2. Learn about best practices to conduct the challenging conversations effectively.
  3. Understand how to overcome tendencies that keep us from having hard conversations.
