Avoiding Bias by Recognizing and Respecting Racial Distinctions

Originally presented:  March 15, 2022     |     Course length:  2.0 hours

This course takes a look at two cutting-edge legal topics – Bias in Artificial Intelligence and Hair Discrimination – and offers concrete guidance for avoiding bias based on racial distinctions.

How to Address the Impact of AI Bias and Facial Recognition Discrimination  (60 MINUTES)
This session examines the bias embedded in artificial intelligence technology, particularly facial recognition, how this bias affects people of color, and how AI may further marginalize protected groups and perpetuate existing bias in the law and our legal system. The presenters offer guidance for navigating these challenges and minimizing AI’s potentially discriminatory effects where AI is integrated into criminal and civil legal decision-making.
– Colleen Dorsey, Nicholas N. Sperling & Eric C. Williams

What’s Hair Got to Do With It – Hair and Race-Based Discrimination in the Workplace  (60 MINUTES)
Gain a greater understanding of bias related to hair, hairstyles, and grooming techniques, and how this bias is related to racial discrimination. The session includes a discussion of new laws and developments, and best practices for recognizing and respecting racial distinctions and avoiding race-based discrimination.
– Dionne W. Blake & Calandra F. Revering
