Litigation Topics: Effortless Communication – The Fundamentals of Working with Interpreters

Originally presented:  May 31, 2018     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

As an attorney, you put a lot of thought in to how to precisely word your questions and communications. Your interpreter must be able to accurately render your meaning into the foreign language, and then deliver the exact response, with all of its nuances, back into English. Experienced certified judicial interpreter, April Cedillo, will teach you what you need to know about working with interpreters. You will learn about:

  • Limited English Proficient individuals and how the different expectations they may have of you, and the U.S. legal system, could impact communication
  • The difference between certified, roster, healthcare, and casual interpreters, as well as which type of interpreter you need for your legal proceeding and why
  • The specifics of your interpreted encounter, from start to finish, with practical tips that will make communication clearer and easier
  • Troubleshooting and how to handle the problems that frequently come up in interpreted encounters

Our overall goal is to ensure equal footing for any participant in a legal setting who does not speak English as a first language, as well as more effortless communication.
