Lawyering Skills: How to Influence

Originally presented:  February 15, 2018     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

Influence can be described as the capacity to cause a desired effect. If you know how to influence different people in a multitude of circumstances, you know how to lead and get results. There are many influencing skills and approaches that lawyers, their clients, and other stakeholders may use to persuade others and obtain results. You want to understand your own influencing styles, those of others, and whether they are likely to lead to collaboration or to conflict. We’ll discuss:

  • the role of emotion and logic
  • the basics of push and pull strategies
  • three styles as identified by psychologist R.W. Wallen
    • the tough battler
    • the friendly helper
    • the logical thinker
  • insights from Musselwhite’s and Plouffe’s five influencing styles
  • the role of awareness
  • body language
  • and much more!
