Race, Data and Access to Justice: Do We Know What We Think We Know?

Originally presented:  October 4, 2017     |     Course length:  1.0 hour

There has been a long history of inequity in our judicial system, and in recent years the Minnesota Supreme Court has made efforts to collect data to better understand and address these issues. Yet inequities remain. Hennepin County District Court Referee JaPaul Harris, a member of the court’s Equal Justice Committee, will discuss:

  • The history of race data collection in Minnesota
  • What data are we collecting?
  • Observed race vs. reported race
  • Are we collecting the right data?
  • Using the data for change

– Referee JaPaul Harris; Hennepin County District Court
