The Power of Mindful Lawyering
This seminar is an experiential overview of the practice of mindfulness for lawyers. Mindfulness is a natural capability of awareness that can be cultivated through training. When developed, mindfulness enhances a lawyer’s powers of observation and creativity, promotes greater balance and emotional intelligence in charged conflict situations, and reduces the harmful effects of stress. This seminar will help you expand your skill set as a lawyer. Highlights include:

  • Reasons to take up a mindfulness practice
  • An introduction to the core concepts of mindfulness
  • A primer on the psychophysiology of the stress reaction and how mindfulness promotes a more adaptive and healthy response to stress
  • A review of current research on mindfulness and the brain
  • Experiential exercises that will give you a taste of different aspects of mindfulness
  • Practical ways in which you can incorporate mindfulness into your daily life and legal practice
  • Information on how mindfulness can enhance your legal practice
  • Instruction on how to start and to maintain a mindfulness meditation practice

If you have read about mindfulness and are curious about it, this is a great opportunity to learn more, to get a taste of what mindfulness practice is like, and to start a mindfulness practice. If you have some experience with mindfulness, this will deepen your understanding, provide you motivation to continue with your practice, and help you connect mindfulness with your work as a lawyer. All participants will leave the seminar with simple practices that can be readily incorporated into daily life and work, with or without a more formal practice of meditation.
