Using Legal Design to Develop Your Trial Strategy

Learn how you can use “design thinking” to achieve better results for your clients at trial.

WHAT’S GOING ON?
In recent years, companies and institutions have turned to designers to improve how they deliver services and programs. Given this trend, lawyers could use “design thinking” to address legal challenges in their practice and in their community.

SO WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
The phrase “Legal Design” sounds a bit unusual. Different. Odd. Scary. Definitely not normal!

HOW WILL THIS PROGRAM HELP?
In this afternoon seminar, you’ll learn the basic principles of legal design, the five stages common to any design process, and how you can use legal design to develop your trial strategy for your next big case.

YOUR PRESENTERS:

David J.F. Gross is a partner with Faegre Drinker and a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is a three-time winner of the Minnesota Lawyer Attorney of the Year recognition, and a national expert on the emerging field of Legal Design. David serves on the Board of Stanford Law School’s Center on the Legal Profession and works closely with Stanford’s Legal Design Lab on design training and programs. He regularly participates in “Legal Design Sprints” and has used Legal Design in complex trials for several years.

Kate Razavi is an experienced trial lawyer and partner in the Minneapolis office of Faegre Drinker, is a co-founder of Faegre Drinker’s Design Lab and a national thought leader in the field of Visual Advocacy. Kate works closely with Stanford’s Legal Design Lab on various seminars, programs, and initiatives and has taught a course in Visual Advocacy at the University of Minnesota Law School.

Attendees are encouraged to download Faegre Drinker’s new e-book Design Thinking and Visual Advocacy for Lawyers. This innovative resource introduces legal professionals to concepts of design thinking and visual advocacy. It delves into the background of legal design, offering tips on applying design thinking to everyday work, and explaining how concepts of visual advocacy can be used in the practice of law. Download it for free on Apple Books.

Designing Your Trial Strategy
The best way to learn about Legal Design is to see how it can be used in a hypothetical case to develop a successful trial strategy. You’ll hear about a hypothetical trial facing a hypothetical client, and then we will take you through the five phases of the design process so you can learn the benefits of using “design thinking” to develop a winning trial strategy. Get ready to have a little fun and to step away from your comfort zone for a few minutes while you learn how to win your next trial!
