Tuesday, August 21, 2012 Military and Veterans Law: Service Members in the Minnesota Criminal Justice System Are you working with a veteran or service member in the Minnesota criminal justice system? If you are, what are the unique challenges they face? What tools are available for helping them? Attorney John Baker, who is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and is Chair of the new MSBA Military and Veterans Affairs Section, will be discussing the unique challenges of practicing military and veteran’s law and give you the tools to help work with veterans and service members. This presentation will help you understand what combat stress issues are including post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. It will also help you properly identify a military veteran or service member and understand military documents and lingo. The new Veterans Court and the Veterans Sentencing Mitigation Statute will be discussed, as well as the collateral consequences of certain criminal charges on active duty and reserve service members. – John D.
