4 Terrific National Presenters
in Duluth this August

The faculty this year at the Strategic Solutions Conference is unparalleled, headlined by four national stars that we know you’ll love:

sMatt Homann has built an international reputation as an innovative and passionate thinker about changing the practice of law in ways that benefit both lawyers and clients. He consults, speaks and hosts retreats and conferences to help lawyers serve clients better, be happier, and make more money. He will open this year’s Conference with a kick-off address on building a service-centered firm, followed by an interactive workshop on concrete ways to accomplish that goal. His second plenary session will provide lessons for lawyers from the world’s best business-builders, and he will also lead a breakout session on techniques for creative solos to hone their talents and build better practices. To whet your appetite for Matt's appearance at the Strategic Solutions Conference next month, check out www.thenonbillablehour.typepad.com. Below are several entries from his blog.

  • Ten Rules for New Solos
As our economy sours and the legal job market dries up, there are lots of lawyers looking at solo practice for the first time. As a former solo myself, I’m sharing these ten “rules” for new solos.
    1. The good news: As a solo, you are your own boss, can do whatever you want and answer only to yourself. That’s also the bad news.

Here are my Ten Rules for Conference Attendees:

  • Ten Rules About Hourly Billing
    1. Ask your clients what they buy from you. If it isn’t time, stop selling it!
    2. Imagine a world where your clients know each month how much your bill will be so they could plan for it. They do.

Carolyn Elefant is the ABA’s star solo-practice lecturer and author of Solo by Choice: How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be. Her solo practice in Washington, D.C. focuses on energy regulation, emerging renewables, appeals, and federal litigation. She is a prolific writer, speaker, and blogger, having launched the first and longest running blog on solo and small firm practice, www.Myshingle.com, which has twice been recognized as one of the ABA’s top 100 blogs. Carolyn’s topics at the Strategic Solution Conference include two plenaries, one about the trend toward free services and products in today’s socially networked world and another about the role solo and small firm lawyers play as agents of change in the legal profession. She will also appear on a panel discussing how to use social media in your practice and will lead a breakout on practical systems for structuring a successful solo practice. To read more about Ms. Elefant’s law practice, go to www.his.com/~israel/loce.

Barron Henley is an attorney, legal technologist and president of Henley March & Unger Consulting in Columbus, Ohio, which has provided legal technology consulting to more than 500 law firms nationwide.  Barron will speak at the Strategic Solutions Conference on paper reduction and electronic file management, how to take full advantage of Adobe Acrobat and PD F files, how to tap into the full potential of Word 2007 for drafting legal documents, and how to select and implement the best case management software for your firm. Lisa Solomon, a New York social networking and legal writing guru, assists attorneys with all their legal research and writing needs through her law practice, Lisa Solomon, Esq. Legal Research and Writing. Through her consulting practice, she instructs lawyers on how to start and run successful practices as contract attorneys. Lisa will speak on powerful writing techniques that persuade both judges and clients at the Duluth conference, as well as how to work with (or be) a contract or free-lance lawyer. She will also join a panel discussion with Carolyn Elefant and Sam Glover on how to use social media in your law practice. Join the Bike Ride in Duluthd

The Life & the Law Committee of the Minnesota State Bar Association is sponsoring a bicycle ride at this year’s Strategic Solutions for Solo & Small Firms Conference. The event promotes life balance and raises money for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, a non-profit organization that provides free, confidential assistance to lawyers, judges, law students and their families regarding chemical dependency, mental health concerns, and family, financial, or job-related stress.

The ride this year will be held in Duluth on August 1. The Giro d’Luth is a 5, 12 or 40-mile fully supported bicycle tour of the scenic North Shore beginning and ending at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. It is open to walkers, runners, in-line skaters, and riders whether or not they are registered for the conference.  Registration fees are $25 per adult rider. Group and family discounts are available, and children 16 and under ride free with an adult.

This is the Life & Law Committee’s ninth bike ride, which was previously held in conjunction with the State Bar Convention. The scenic route provides a wonderful experience for riders of all ages and experience levels. The route follows the Duluth Lake Walk, then takes riders through the streets of the east end of Duluth to the Brighton Beach rest stop. More ambitious riders can then travel to the turnaround rest stop at Knife River.

Please join us – it’s a great way for you and your family members to kick off the Conference. You’ll enjoy good food, receive a free t-shirt, and win prizes by collecting cards at designated points on the route. Spend some quality time with family, old friends and most likely some new friends!

Sponsorship opportunities from $50 to $1000 are still available. Riders, sponsors and volunteers, please contact Dawn Sieber, Life & the Law Bike Ride Chair at 763-323-5568 or dawn.sieber@co.anoka.mn.us with questions.
